The first keynote at Ausweb was given by Dr Eugene Clark of Charles Darwin Uni, who had some interesting things to say about law and regulation as it relates to the Web. He focused on risk management, regulation, and jurisdiction in the online world, with heaps of examples of law and the web that have been through the courts, including the Grokster case mentioned elsewhere in this blog. One point he made that was highly relevant to my work was that web technology needs to redesign the tradeoffs between accountability, anonymity, and freedom of action. He also spent a bit of time talking about Lessig’s ideas on IP. He had a lot of material and had to leave some out, but hopefully he will put the slides on line. Overall a fascinating keynote.
